HIsmelt smelt reduction

Licensed hot metal production

HIsmelt® Corporation, a subsidiary of the Rio Tinto Group, has granted Outotec a license for the HIsmelt® Process, a coal-based smelting reduction technology for the production of hot metal / pig iron from iron ore fines.

After more than a decade of intensive development work, the HIsmelt Corporation is currently building a HIsmelt Plant with a 6 m Smelt Reduction Vessel (SRV) for the production of 0.8 million tpa hot metal in Kwinana, Western Australia.

Outotec is involved in this project for the design, engineering and supply of the iron ore fines preheater with a circulating fluidized bed which will be installed at the front end of the smelt reduction vessel. By injecting hot and slightly prereduced ore into the SRV the capacity of the smelting reduction facility is increased significantly. The design of the iron ore preheater is based on the circulating fluidized bed principle as successfully operated in the Circored® Plant in Trinidad.

Even greater benefit is achieved by combined preheating and prereduction of iron ore fines with our Circofer® process. Adding this prereduction stage triples the capacity of the smelting furnace and lowers the specific operation costs of the entire plant significantly.
