Flash Converting

Outotec's Flash Smelting combined with Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting is an integrated smelting solution resulting in low investment and operating costs with the most effective emission control.

The Kennecott-Outokumpu Flash Converting process is the result of a successful development work carried out jointly by Kennecott Utah Copper Corporation and Outotec. The process is an innovative application of the Flash Smelting technology. 


 
When Flash Smelting is combined with Flash Converting, operation costs are reduced even further. Maintenance and capital expenditure is lower compared to a smelter with several Peirce-Smith converters. Granulated matte from other smelters offers additional options for optimization of the production.

There are no timing problems in the continuous process, since smelting and converting are decoupled. High on-line availability can be continuously maintained. The process optimizes the use of sulfuric acid plant and other existing installations. The continuous nature of the highly automated process helps to improve process control and ensures the continuous flow of high strength SO2 gases. The closed process also improves working conditions and reduces environmental emissions.
