For copper producers who want to meet the most stringent production and quality requirements Outotec's electrowinning and electrorefining technology is a safe choice. Advances in impurity control have led to a process that yields very high purity cathodes. Outotec has paid special attention to tankhouse design in order to maximize production capacity, while a high degree of automation minimizes operational costs.

The best permanent cathodes

Outotec’s permanent cathodes have been developed to offer maximum tankhouse productivity with a minimum service requirement. Their high mechanical strength and dimensional accuracy, combined with their unsurpassed acid resistance, provide consistent performance over a long service life.

With a large copper cross-section in the suspension bar, a specially finished stainless steel plate, a stainless steel jacket, and long-lasting edge strips, Outotec’s permanent cathodes enable users to maintain high electrolyte levels ­– thereby reducing initial investment costs, as well as day-to-day energy consumption and anode scrap rates.

Advanced cell design

Not content with sitting on its laurels, Outotec has further enhanced its technology in this area and introduced a double contact bus bar system, in which anodes and cathodes have an electrical contact on both sides of their surfaces.

This gives more balanced current distribution, resulting in better cathode weight distribution and fewer short circuits, as well as energy savings and more output with less scrap. Simple, high-strength construction makes for easy washing and cleaning.

Our compact tankhouse concept makes it simple to extend the size of electrolytic cells, and helps keep construction costs down as well.

Further benefits are provided by Outotec's cell-cleaning system, which enables electrolytic cells to be cleaned while the electrodes and electrolyte are in and the current is on, providing:

  • Unmanned cell-cleaning operation
  • Separate cell-cleaning and electrode-pulling operations
  • Optimum process timings, and
  • Constant cell structure temperature.

Seamless handling

Outotec has designed its anodes and cathodes for easy, fast, and accurate handling. Electrode handling cranes interface seamlessly with electrodes, cells, and other equipment, reducing the overall equipment count and maximizing the availability and time efficiency of the plating process.

Comprehensively mechanising and automating tankhouse operations can enhance productivity; and our automation solutions can control an entire electrode ­handling system or just one machine, depending on local needs.

Individual electrode tracking is offered as an extra option, enabling operators to both monitor the details of production, such as optimizing process parameters in line with prevailing conditions such as anode composition, and carry out proactive maintenance.
