Through sponsorship Outotec seeks to project a positive corporate image as a responsible social actor and communicate its brand values and principles to different stakeholders.
Outotec’s involvement in sponsorship is planned and based on long-term collaboration with a few carefully selected partners. Key considerations in the selection of a partner include compatibility with Outotec’s principles, possibility of using the sponsorship for stakeholder collaboration, and media visibility.
Outotec’s sponsorship, whether international, national or local, primarily targets sustainable development, arts and music, as well as student and youth activities.
The Millennium Technology Prize
Outotec's main sponsorship relating to scientific research which supports sustainable development is the Millennium Technology Prize. The prize is granted every second year and it celebrates innovations that have a favourable impact on quality of life and well-being. In particular, the prize seeks to highlight innovations that assist and enrich our everyday lives today as well as in the future. The 2008 Millennium Technology Prize was awarded to Professor Robert Langer, supported by Outotec as a corporate partner. Dr. Langer is known as the father of controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering and has been cited as "one of history's most prolific inventors in medicine". He holds 380 patents, has published 680 articles and 13 books and has licensed products to about 80 companies.
Dr. Robert Langer has discovered and developed many advanced drug delivery systems that have had a significant impact on fighting cancer, heart disease, mental health illnesses and numerous other diseases.
Sustainable development
Besides developing environmentally sustainable technologies, Outotec aims at reducing the environmental impact of its actions also in the office and its own operations. For example, instead of sending Christmas cards, Outotec sends electronic cards and donates money to charity. In 2007, Outotec made a donation to support Unicef's work in Eritrea, where long-lasting drought is hindering people’s everyday lives.
Arts and music
In 2007, Outotec supported the Sibelius and beyond festival in London. Jean Sibelius was a great Finnish composer, a pioneer in his field, who has provided inspiration for subsequent generations of Finnish musicians. To celebrate the great achievements of Jean Sibelius, the Finnish Institute in London organized Sibelius and Beyond – a major festival where international orchestras, soloists, conductors and chamber musicians performed Sibelius’ music, and that of his successors, in concerts spread across London.
Student and youth activities
Outotec has close cooperation with universities and students in order to secure capable employees in the future. The company supports students by granting awards and scholarships through foundations, by organizing visits, lectures, internships, and by offering opportunities for diploma theses.
As part of the local community involvement, Outotec's unit around the world supported children’s education, sports and hobbies which improve their well-being and increase joy in their life.
